Back to Studying ASL with Sonya

I have been missing my ASL class for two months because I was busy with my film and I was really happy to finally be back! I’m always looking forward to the hour and a half of silence, where I don’t feel like I have to talk.

It was intimidating to speak with my hands and face again but Sonya was very encouraging and she didn’t let me dwell on the past and on me missing classes. She told me to look forward, forget the two months and look ahead and do my best to catch up.

Of course I was asking throughout the entire class about what certain words meant and asked to repeat everything, but everybody was okay with it. It was a great exercise in sign communication for all of us and for me it was a great exercise to allow myself to ask questions. I hate to inconvenience people, but I didn’t feel like I was inconveniencing anybody because it became an exercise for everyone to explain in sign.

Words that we learned:

inspired anniversary
every (thing, one, where) lecture
basics what’s up
friendly to join (jump in)
to support travel
sign fun
romance woman power
create young (young-er)
catch up old-er
review tease
diverse instantly
confident famous
principal to inform (or message)
professional mushroom
clothes early
change (as in change in something) full service
clearly launch (like launch of a book)
to include Belief
foundation volunteer

I left inspired on my bike and followed Sonya and Heather-Lyn all the way to Franklin, where she left me in the dust (or in exhaust) so I decided to drop by Skylight Books to order 2 books of “The Conversations” by… for my two editors Kelly Stuvesant and Raz.

After Skylight Books I visited the Los Feliz Farmers Market behind Dresden and got me some veggies and fruits and a homemade cobbler. I guess ASL makes me want to buy things, so learning ASL is good for the economy and for my community.

Thank you Sonya for the inspiration and for always encouraging me to learn, learn, learn!
